In 2006, after two years of shuttling her husband to and from the airport while he traveled to France regularly for work, de facto single mother Lisa Knotts was rewarded with the opportunity of a lifetime to move her family to France for the summer. In spite of three occasionally reluctant children and a husband who often had to work, Lisa endeavored to make the most of her family's time in Europe. A Summer Abroad invites you along as the author and her family blitz-tour Paris in a day (and listen to seven-year-old Michael expound on paintings in the d'Orsay), eat their way around Belgium with Lisa's cousins, walk the D-Day beaches in Normandy, and wander the streets of Pompeii with Vesuvius looming in the distance. Along with these road trips and the weekend jaunts around Provence, the unhurried living of everyday life in a small fishing village on the Mediterranean Côte Bleue translated the author's vague, youthful fantasy of living abroad into quirky, delightful reality, complete with marauding snails.

Resonating with those who have either lived overseas or traveled with children, this memoir has the power to charm anyone who's dreamed of spending a summer abroad.

A Summer Abroad Clotheslines Bouchons and Snails That Eat the Mail eBook Lisa Knotts

A delightful, charming and witty look at a Southerner's perspective of a summer in Provence. I enjoyed the descriptions of life, food and the scenery both in the locale and their ambles around the country. Readers will be tempted to contact Travelocity to book their own trip as soon as they have finished reading. I'm going to recommend it for our next book club selection.

A Summer Abroad Clotheslines Bouchons and Snails That Eat the Mail eBook Lisa Knotts Reviews

A very enjoyable book. This narrative of a family's summer in France was poignant, insightful and fun to read. You could feel their frustration as they struggled with a ne language and their joy in discovering a different culture. She made me wish my family could spend a summer abroad.
From the lovely cover to the bittersweet end, this book invites you to become part of the family as they spend a summer in the south of France. The author, Lisa Knotts, proves to be a wonderful travel companion with wit and charm along with a few personal quirks, like a dreadful fear of flying and a love of tombs. The author's clear eye for detail, her sense of humor, and her Southern sensibility transform a trip through well trodden tourist areas into something new. The author introduces charming shop owners, an array of extended family, and many friends, and I was glad to meet them all. As I read this lovely book, half way through a summer spent at home, I resolved to embrace where possible the sense of reveling in the present moment that Ms. Knotts conjures in relating her summer abroad.

My mother also wished to review the book, and since she does not have a computer, I agreed to post it for her. "The Author presents her travels in Provence from a unique perspective--her family. She has changed a travelogue to a warm, personal experience. Each carefully crafted word and sentence makes the reader feel as if she is seeing the wonder of ancient ruins, tombs and cathedrals, tasting the incredible food, and accepting the inconveniences in most cleaning appliances. It is a delightful book that I enjoyed completely."
I truly enjoyed the author's perspective of her summer in France. The way she describes not only what they experienced but how they affected her was wonderful. It made me want to move to France immediately.
