"Less than free lives our love
Obstructed on all sides,
A plant pining for above,
Such darkness it abides,

Twisting with the throes of fate
Round boulders big and small,
Forced to wind, wend, and wait,
Ever upward---enduring all.

The struggle lifts the passion,
Pushing fortitude (not vice),
Virtue pays the ransom,
Freeing love from lust to life.

A life of love is the end
To which all men should strive,
And so we must contort and bend
Whilst this plant will thrive.

For one day the Sun will shine,
And patience prove its worth,
And flowers sprout on the vine,
And true love will be truth."

The world is different, but war is the same. And the noble and nefarious Steam Pirates seek a method to change both to bring about an era of enforced arbitrated peace. They need a weaponized machine to paralyze with fear the often aggressive Former Roman Provinces of Europa. Only one honest man, Phineas Fielding, genius, alliterator, and heir to the Vespasian Monarchy, can build it for them. Will he do what he must so he can be free to reunite with the love of his life? Will he trample his ethics, change them, or hold true in the face of dire consequences and moral quandaries?

The Evolving Ethos of Phineas Fielding eBook J Gerard Kohle

Thee and one-half stars would be more accurate, but you that wasn't an option. The story was inventive, exciting, and interesting. It had a clear hero figure. It was interesting how Koehle created a brilliant hero with high ideals who eventually developed a wee bit of humility. However, the book needed more/better editing for typing, grammar, mechanics, and length--it was way too long and quite wordy. Also, it attempted to consistently use its "Vespasian" dialect invented by Koehle, but it often lapsed into Western American English. In spite of the foreshadowing, Phineas' capitulation to "love conquers all" needed some development following Odocor's advisory visit. He "evolved" from a ruler of a small country to a belief that he could establish peace in the world, but he jumped from trying to do that through violence to "love conquers all" in a couple of pages.

The Evolving Ethos of Phineas Fielding eBook J Gerard Kohle Reviews

The Evolving Ethos of Phineas Fielding is very engaging. I especially loved the quirky traits that mark each character, and the character growth that occurs throughout the story. The world is creative and interesting. The style of the writing is light hearted and fun, without drawing attention away from the story. Overall, it is a great journey into the world of steam punk literature, and I would full-heartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a new read.
